UKYP elections take place every year, in every part of the UK. Any young person aged 11-18 can stand or vote in the UKYP elections. (Gloucestershire Candidates must live within the county).
Once elected MYPs and DMYPs work closely with MPs, councillors, school and youth councils and peer group members on the issues of greatest concern to their constituents.
UKYP is divided into different regions and each region has a set number of members and deputies, dependant on the size of the region. At a regional level, MYPs and DMYPs organise campaigns, projects and events as well as identifying common issues of concern.
Gloucestershire is one of the many counties that belong to the southwest region. Gloucestershire elect 3 MYPs and 3 DMYPs each year who are fully supported by Gloucestershire Youth Service.
2010-11 Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs) held an evening event at Chequers Bridge Centre, Gloucester to celebrate and share their achievements throughout the year to audience of invited guests, family and friends.
The six elected MYPs for 2010-11 are nearing the end of their elected term. The MYPs will celebrate their achievements next week at an event attended by family and friends, representatives of organisations they have worked with throughout the year and MPs.
With the announcements of the Governments Spending Review in October and the implications of this for Gloucestershire over the coming months we have decided to postpone the Elections 11 process. Elections will be held during 2011-12 and dates will be announced as soon as appropriate.
Although it only feels like a very short time since the completion of the last Elections, the planning stages for the 2011 Elections are just beginning and we need your help!
We need to recruit as many youth projects and schools as possible to become Polling Stations providing young people between the ages of 11-18 years with the opportunity to vote for their representative.
